Should you play GTA 5 before GTA 6? The honest answer for 2026

Never played GTA 5? Then yes, and GTA 6 has little to do with it. With more than 230 million copies sold (Take-Two, 7 August 2026) it is the biggest game in the series and still the benchmark for how Rockstar builds an open world: three playable leads, heists with a planning phase, and a satirical Los Santos that has aged better than most games from 2013. At £39.99 list, regularly far cheaper in a sale, or bundled into PS Plus Extra, the value is hard to argue with. You will learn the tone, the mission structure and the mechanics Rockstar is known for. Treat it as the best possible primer – not as homework.

Played it years ago on PS3, PS4 or Xbox One? Buying it again rarely makes sense. If you own a PS4 version, the PS5 edition is free: according to reports, Rockstar reopened the no-cost upgrade in June 2026, including a one-time transfer of Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters. If you only want to refresh the plot, a recap does the job in ten minutes; if you fancy another drive through Los Santos, your old copy still works. Either way you should not need to spend anything.

Still active in GTA Online? The question for you is whether to keep sinking time and money in. GTA Online is very much alive: the last major update, the Kortz Center Heist, landed on 14 July 2026, and weekly events continue every Thursday. Take-Two describes GTA 6 officially as a single-player experience, and Rockstar has not announced any online mode for it. Your character stays where it is for now. What you should avoid is grinding on the assumption that anything will carry across to GTA 6 – more on that below.

On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S the Enhanced version has been the standard since 15 March 2022, with faster loading, performance modes and extra GTA Online content. The PC Enhanced release followed on 4 March 2025, free for existing PC owners. On the UK PS Store, Grand Theft Auto V (PS4 & PS5) lists at £39.99 (checked 21 August 2026), and the standalone Grand Theft Auto Online for PS5 at £19.99. GTA 5 is also currently in the PS Plus Extra Game Catalogue – Sony does not say for how long. Xbox Store and Steam carry their own list prices; expect similar money and frequent discounts.

Sales are the norm rather than the exception; if you are not in a hurry, wait for one. Buying digitally also lets you shave a bit more off with discounted store credit – we explain the method in buy GTA 6 cheaper, and it works just the same for GTA 5. For a boxed copy, Amazon.co.uk, Argos, GAME, Currys and Smyths all stock PS5 and Xbox Series versions; prices and availability move around, so we are deliberately not quoting figures. GTA 5 is PEGI 18, which UK retailers are legally required to enforce.

The naming trips people up, but the logic is simple. Legacy means the previous generation: PS4, Xbox One and the original PC build. Enhanced is the current version for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Buy Grand Theft Auto V (PS4 & PS5) on the PS Store today and both versions come in one purchase – nothing to upgrade separately. The Premium Edition you still see in shops is the base game plus a 2018 GTA Online starter pack; it is not a better build, just the old-generation game with bonus items. Whether your particular copy qualifies for the free PS5 upgrade is best checked in the transfer guide linked above.

If you own a PS4 disc: disc in the PS5, grab the upgrade from the store, run the one-time migration – the requirements and pitfalls are in that guide. On Xbox, check which versions are eligible for migration first, because the rules differ from PlayStation. Our advice for first-time buyers: go digital on your current console so you get the Enhanced version straight away. Do not buy the standalone GTA Online if you want the story – it does not include Story Mode. On PC you just need the regular GTA V; Enhanced comes with it.

Budget around 30 hours for the main story, roughly 50 hours with the worthwhile side content, and comfortably past 80 hours for completion. Those are community ballpark figures, not official numbers, and they vary a lot with how you play. There are about 13 weeks left until 19 November, so two to three hours a week gets you through the campaign without rushing; a free weekend a month leaves room for the heists and side missions on top. Do not speed-run it – the heists and the character-specific missions are where the game is at its best.

Short on time? Prioritise: the prologue and the opening missions for all three protagonists, then the heists, then the finale. The Strangers & Freaks missions are excellent but optional. You can ignore GTA Online entirely if you only care about the story, and you need no story knowledge to enjoy Online. The biggest mistake you could make right now is pouring money or weeks into GTA Online because you expect to bring something across to GTA 6. There is no official basis for that. As of 21 August 2026, Rockstar has said nothing about transferring characters, GTA$ or unlocks – and has not announced an online mode for GTA 6 at all. History points the other way: nothing carried over from GTA IV to GTA V, or from Red Dead Redemption to RDR2. The current state of play is in GTA Online transfer to GTA 6.

Second, do not stockpile Shark Cards. That money lives in GTA Online within GTA 5, not in a future game. Third, a digital GTA 6 pre-order includes a free month of GTA+ according to Take-Two, which then auto-renews at £6.99 a month. That is a perk for today's GTA Online – not a reason to buy GTA 5, and not a hint that the two games are connected. If you do not want the renewal, cancel it in your subscription settings.

If you want to get in the mood for Leonida rather than Los Santos, GTA: Vice City from 2002 is the closer fit. It is set in the same fictional city – Rockstar's take on Miami – in the 1980s. Today it exists only as part of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition or as a standalone Definitive Edition; list prices vary by platform and the bundle is discounted often. Expect a retro feel: the Definitive Edition refreshed the visuals, but the controls are still from another era. Rockstar has not said whether GTA 6 references any characters or events from back then; the Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus reportedly nods to the style of the period, nothing more.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) is Rockstar's most recent game and the closest thing to how a modern Rockstar title plays: mission design, animation, world density. If you want to understand what the studio builds now, it teaches you more than GTA 5 does. But it is a slow western epic of 50-plus hours, not a warm-up for GTA 6. Our recommendation: newcomers take GTA 5, atmosphere-seekers take Vice City, Rockstar devotees with time to spare take RDR2 – and anyone who only wants Leonida simply lets the 90 days pass.

Never played it: buy it – ideally digital in a sale or through PS Plus Extra; verdict: clearly worth it. Played it years ago and still own a PS4 copy: do not rebuy, use the free PS5 upgrade or read the recap; verdict: worth it without spending. Active Online player: keep playing, but do not grind or buy anything in anticipation of GTA 6; verdict: yes, with a caveat. Only interested in GTA 6: wait, sort your pre-order and preload; verdict: no, not needed. Around 30 hours of story fits comfortably into the remaining 13 weeks – GTA 5 is a good buy, but it is not a ticket to Leonida.

In one line: if you want a brilliant game for little money, buy GTA 5 Enhanced and play the story. If you want to prepare for GTA 6, Los Santos is not where that happens – the real preparation is your console, storage space and Rockstar account. Still on the fence? Wait for the next sale or check the PS Plus Extra catalogue first. At £20 or less the downside is small, even if you decide after ten hours that you would rather hold out for Leonida. The only genuinely poor decision is spending money in GTA Online today on the strength of a carry-over nobody has announced.

Unconfirmed, first: any carry-over of GTA Online progress into GTA 6 – Rockstar has made no statement. Second: an online mode for GTA 6 at all; official copy calls it a single-player experience. Third: how long GTA 5 stays in the PS Plus Extra Game Catalogue, since Sony typically announces departures at short notice. Fourth: whether the PS4-to-PS5 migration has a deadline. Fifth: a PC version of GTA 6 – on PC, GTA 5 remains the newest GTA until further notice. And the play-time figures above are estimates, not measurements.
