Will GTA Online progress transfer to GTA 6? What is confirmed and what is not
Quick answer

With roughly 90 days to go until 19 November 2026, one question keeps resurfacing: what becomes of the years you have sunk into GTA Online? The bunker, the garages full of cars, the millions sitting in your Maze Bank account. The honest answer is short. Rockstar has not addressed it. This page logs what has actually been said and when, compares how earlier Rockstar sequels handled the switch, and lays out what it means for your money and your remaining weeks in Los Santos. We will update it the moment Rockstar breaks its silence.
Does GTA Online progress carry over to GTA 6?
Officially, there is no answer. As of 21 August 2026, neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has stated that characters, GTA$, rank or vehicles from GTA Online will move into GTA 6. Nor have they ruled it out. That matters, because both versions are being repeated online as if settled. Neither is. The only official description of GTA 6, on the PlayStation Store and in Take-Two's press release of 24 June 2026, is that the game features a "single-player experience" set across the state of Leonida. No online mode for GTA 6 has been announced, which means there is currently no destination a transfer could even point at.
What does exist is indirect. In February 2025, Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick was asked about GTA Online's future once GTA 6 arrives. According to GamingBible he answered "theoretically", refusing to discuss an unannounced project, and said: "We support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles." That is a statement about keeping a game alive, not about moving your progress. The 24 June 2026 press release pitches the free GTA+ month for digital pre-orders as the way into the "ever-evolving world of GTA Online". Again, that signals the current GTA Online continues. It says nothing about carry-over.
On 7 August 2026, in Take-Two's Q1 FY27 results, Zelnick said the company expects to "sustain this new level of scale and generate strong cash flows" for years. Plenty of people read that as a promise of ongoing online revenue, and recurrent spending did make up 84 per cent of net bookings that quarter. But it is a reading, not an announcement. Our position: carry-over is unconfirmed, with no statement either way.
What earlier Rockstar transitions tell us
Rockstar has historically treated two situations very differently. Situation one: a new game. Nothing moved from GTA IV to GTA V in 2013, even though GTA IV had its own multiplayer. Nothing moved from Red Dead Redemption to Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 either; Red Dead Online started everyone from scratch. Situation two: the same game on a new console generation. Here transfers did happen. In 2014 GTA Online players carried their character from PS3 and Xbox 360 to PS4 and Xbox One, and to PC in 2015. Since March 2022 there has been a migration from PS4 and Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series, which the PlayStation Store describes as a "one-time migration" covering Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters.
That distinction is the whole story. A generation jump is technically the same game with the same economy, the same items and the same price list. GTA 6 is a new game with a new map, a new vehicle roster and, in all likelihood, an entirely new economy. A garage of Los Santos supercars does not even make narrative sense in Vice City. None of this means Rockstar could not do something. But based on every precedent, the most likely outcome is no transfer at all, with at most a token nod to long-time players. More on that below.
What this means for your money and Shark Cards
The practical rule is simple: do not buy Shark Cards with GTA 6 in mind. There is no commitment that a single GTA$ will make the jump, and every precedent says it will not. If you buy a Shark Card, buy it because you want to enjoy GTA Online now, whether that is the Kortz Center Heist or the current weekly events. That is a perfectly reasonable choice, but it is a choice about this week, not about November. If you would rather protect your launch budget, the gift card trick for GTA 6 usually stretches it further than another Megalodon card would.
The same logic applies to GTA+. The subscription costs £6.99 a month, and the free month bundled with digital pre-orders auto-renews unless you cancel. Its perks live in today's GTA Online and the GTA+ games library, not in GTA 6. Rumours about legacy rewards, meaning bonuses in GTA 6 for players with a long Online history or a linked Rockstar Games account, circulate constantly. Rockstar has done something like this on a small scale before: finishing the treasure hunt in GTA Online unlocked the Double-Action Revolver in RDR2. Nothing comparable has been announced for GTA 6. We list it as unconfirmed speculation and nothing more.
Is GTA Online shutting down?
No. At least, nothing of the sort has been announced, and the evidence runs the other way. GTA Online is still receiving content. The Kortz Center Heist Summer Update landed on 14 July 2026, and Take-Two named it explicitly in its 7 August results. Weekly events continue every Thursday; this week's is the Brand Wars event running 20 to 26 August 2026. GTA V is still sold on the PlayStation Store for PS4 and PS5, alongside the standalone GTA Online for PS5. A game that is actively sold and still getting new heists is not a game that gets switched off three months from now.
There has been exactly one shutdown so far: GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360 went offline in December 2021, more than eight years after launch and with around six months' notice. That is the benchmark. If Rockstar ever retires the PS4 and Xbox One servers, the pattern suggests months of warning rather than a quiet death on launch day. The fact that Rockstar reopened the free PS5 upgrade and simplified migration in June 2026 reads like an effort to move players onto current-gen hardware. But no end date has been named for any platform.
What to do before 19 November 2026
First, treat your GTA Online progress as exactly what it is: progress in GTA Online. If you still have goals, the last heist, the missing car, rank 500, go after them now for their own sake. Our things to do before GTA 6 list rounds up what is still worth your time. Second, link your PSN or Xbox account to a Rockstar Games account if you have not already, and switch on two-step verification. It is required for any migration and it would be the only plausible basis for a future veteran reward, should one ever exist. The steps are in our Rockstar account checklist.
Third, if you are still playing GTA Online on PS4 or Xbox One, migrate to PS5 or Xbox Series. The PlayStation Store calls it a one-time migration, the PS5 upgrade has been free since June 2026, and only the Enhanced version receives all current content. Whether the migration has a deadline is not known, so moving before launch is the safe play. Our PS4-to-PS5 transfer guide covers the process and the exceptions, including the special rules for disc copies on Xbox. Fourth, plan GTA 6 as a clean start. Walk in on 19 November expecting nothing to transfer and the only possible surprise is a pleasant one.
What is still unconfirmed
Almost everything that makes this page worth reading is still open. Unconfirmed: whether GTA 6 gets an online mode at all, when it would arrive, and whether it would be part of GTA 6 or a separate product. Reports of "no online at launch" or "online in December 2026" are analyst and press estimates, not Rockstar statements. Unconfirmed: any form of transfer, whether cash, character, rank, vehicles or cosmetics. Unconfirmed: legacy rewards for veterans. Unconfirmed: an end date for GTA Online on any platform, or a deadline for the PS4-to-PS5 migration.
What we do know for certain: GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, is officially described as a single-player experience, and GTA Online continues to receive updates. On 27 August 2026 Netflix airs "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" at 8pm BST. Whether it touches on online is anyone's guess. We will update this page, with date and source, as soon as Rockstar or Take-Two says anything about transfers, an online mode or the future of the servers.

FAQ
Will GTA Online progress transfer to GTA 6?
As of 21 August 2026, nothing has been announced. Rockstar and Take-Two have said nothing for or against it. No previous Rockstar sequel (GTA IV to V, RDR to RDR2) carried progress over. Plan GTA 6 as a fresh start.
Does GTA 5 money carry over to GTA 6?
There is no indication it will. GTA$ is tied to GTA Online, and no Rockstar sequel has ever carried in-game cash forward. Do not buy Shark Cards with GTA 6 in mind; buy them only if you want to spend them now.
Is there a GTA 6 character transfer?
No, nothing of the kind has been promised. GTA 6 has fixed protagonists in Jason and Lucia, and no online mode has been announced. Your Online character stays in GTA Online, which continues.
What happens to GTA Online when GTA 6 comes out?
Everything Take-Two has said points to GTA Online continuing. The June 2026 press release calls it "ever-evolving", and Zelnick spoke in 2025 of supporting titles while players are engaged. A concrete post-launch plan has not been published.
Is GTA Online shutting down?
No shutdown has been announced. GTA Online received the Kortz Center Heist in July 2026 and still gets weekly updates. The only shutdown to date covered PS3 and Xbox 360 in December 2021, with about six months' notice.
Will GTA 6 have its own online mode?
Not announced. Officially GTA 6 is described as a "single-player experience". Reports of a later online launch are estimates, not Rockstar statements.
Should I still migrate GTA Online from PS4 to PS5?
Yes, if you are still on PS4. The PlayStation Store calls it a one-time migration, the PS5 upgrade has been free since June 2026, and only the Enhanced version gets all new content. No deadline is known, so moving before launch is the safe option.
