GTA 5 PS4 to PS5 transfer: how to move your Story Mode save and GTA Online character in 2026

Quick answer

The GTA 5 PS5 upgrade has reportedly been free for every PS4 owner since 18 June 2026, disc or digital. You upload your Story Mode save to Rockstar's cloud from the PS4 pause menu and download it on PS5; your GTA Online character moves in a one-time migration the first time you launch the PS5 version with a linked Rockstar Games account. Earned GTA$, rank, vehicles and properties all come across; purchased GTA$ only transfers within the PlayStation family, and Rockstar has not confirmed any deadline.

With roughly 90 days left until GTA 6, a surprising number of British players are still running GTA 5 on a PS4. Since 18 June 2026 the PS5 upgrade has reportedly cost nothing, and a one-time migration carries both your Story Mode save and your GTA Online character across. Make the jump now and you have until 19 November 2026 to get used to the PS5 version, lock in your progress and sort out your Rockstar Games account properly. This guide walks through what transfers, what doesn't, and the handful of rules Rockstar still hasn't confirmed.

Legacy vs Enhanced: which GTA 5 do you own?

In 2026 GTA 5 comes in two technically separate builds. The older edition for PS4 and Xbox One is what Rockstar now calls "Legacy". The newer edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is "Enhanced", launched on 15 March 2022 with 4K output, higher frame rates, faster loading, ray-tracing options and online extras such as Hao's Special Works vehicles. PC only got the Enhanced build on 4 March 2025, as a free upgrade for existing owners. The Legacy/Enhanced labels were formally introduced with that PC release; on console the PlayStation Store simply lists "GTA V (PS4 & PS5)".

Why this matters in practice: the PS4 and PS5 builds are different games with separate online sessions. A PS4 player and a PS5 player will never share a lobby, even with identical PSN friends lists. So the upgrade pays off most when your crew has already moved on. Not sure which build you have? Check the PlayStation Store entry for a "PS5 version" label, or open the settings menu: the Enhanced build offers graphics modes, the Legacy build doesn't.

What changed in June 2026: the PS5 upgrade is now free

Until mid-2026 the PS4-to-PS5 jump cost money. After the three-month launch window in 2022 Rockstar charged for the PS5 version; Push Square readers mention paying around £8.75 in the comments, though we couldn't verify an official price history. According to Push Square on 18 June 2026, Rockstar has removed that paywall entirely: every existing PS4 owner, whether on disc or download, can now grab the PS5 version at no cost from the game hub on the PlayStation Store.

Rockstar's own description, as quoted in the report, promises "vast technical improvements, easy migration of your Story Mode and Online progress" plus new features such as Hao's Special Works vehicles and Career Progress rewards. Push Square frames the move as a push to bring the roughly two million remaining PS4 GTA Online players over before GTA 6, a figure that comes from the outlet rather than from Rockstar. Neither Rockstar nor the report mentions an end date for the free upgrade. One catch for disc owners: the Blu-ray remains your licence, so it has to be in the drive every time you launch the PS5 version.

How to transfer your GTA 5 Story Mode save from PS4 to PS5

Michael, Franklin and Trevor's progress doesn't travel through PSN cloud saves; it goes through Rockstar's own servers. Step 1: launch GTA 5 on the PS4 with the PSN account that owns the save, and make sure your Rockstar Games account (formerly Social Club) is linked to that PSN account. Step 2: in Story Mode, open the pause menu and switch to the "Game" tab. Step 3: select "Upload Save Game" and confirm. Rockstar allows exactly one uploaded save per platform, so a fresh upload overwrites the previous one.

Step 4: install the PS5 version, launch it and enter Story Mode. The download option sits in the same spot in the pause menu. It writes the save locally to your PS5 and you carry on as normal. Mind the time limit: Rockstar's launch announcement states that an uploaded save stays available for 90 days. Don't upload in August and plan to collect it at Christmas. Your PS4 copy and its local save are untouched; the transfer is a copy, not a move.

How to migrate your GTA Online character from PS4 to PS5

Online migration is a separate process, and Rockstar describes it as one-time only. You'll need an active PlayStation Plus subscription (GTA Online requires it on PS5), a Rockstar Games account linked to the PSN account that holds your PS4 character, and to launch the PS5 version on that same PSN account. The first time you enter GTA Online on PS5 the game offers to bring your profile over from the previous generation. Skip that prompt and create a fresh character instead and things get awkward, so set aside a few quiet minutes for the first launch.

Rockstar listed what comes across on the PlayStation Blog: characters, GTA$, progression, stats, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing and player-created jobs. GTA$ has a special rule: earned GTA$ always transfers, but purchased GTA$ (Shark Cards) only moves within the same platform family, so PS4 to PS5 yes, PS4 to Xbox no. At the 2022 launch, migrated characters also received an HSW-tuned Karin S95 with a racing outfit and Chameleon paints; whether that bonus is still handed out in 2026 is unconfirmed. We also couldn't verify what happens to the PS4 character after migration, so read the on-screen warning carefully before you confirm.

Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S: the Microsoft side

The Xbox route follows the same logic. In its Xbox Wire launch post on 14 March 2022, Rockstar confirmed you can "transfer both GTAV Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression to Xbox Series X|S with a one-time migration". Story saves go up to Rockstar's cloud from the pause menu, and Online migration triggers the first time you open GTA Online on the Series console. The GTA$ rule applies the same way: purchased GTA$ stays inside the Xbox family, earned GTA$ moves regardless.

Two things we couldn't check for Xbox. First, whether the Series X|S upgrade went free alongside the PS5 one in June 2026; Push Square only reports on PlayStation. Open the Microsoft Store entry for your Xbox One copy and see whether an upgrade option appears without a price. Second, whether disc owners are excluded from that upgrade path is unconfirmed. The one hard fact is hardware: the Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so an Xbox One disc can't be used on it at all. Disc owners moving to a Series S will most likely need a digital licence.

Common problems: save not found, account linking, friends lists

"No save found" almost always comes down to one of three things: the upload never completed on PS4 (wait for the confirmation message), the 90-day window has expired, or a different Rockstar Games account is signed in on the PS5 than on the PS4. Check your Rockstar Games account's linked accounts page and make sure the PSN ID you uploaded from is the one listed. Our Rockstar account checklist covers setting that up properly, including two-step verification.

The other classic: migration is never offered. That happens when you've already created an Online character on PS5, or when your Rockstar account is linked to a different PSN ID. In either case only Rockstar Support can untangle it. As for friends: your PSN friends list is unaffected, but anyone still on PS4 becomes unreachable in GTA Online because the builds run separately. Agree the switch with your crew first, or you'll end up playing in parallel universes.

Why sort this out before GTA 6 lands

GTA 6 arrives on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only; the PlayStation Store states it "is not playable on PlayStation 4". If you're still on PS4, a console change is coming regardless, and the GTA 5 upgrade is the perfect rehearsal: you link the Rockstar account, learn the PS5 menus and park your Online character where Rockstar's attention now sits. GTA Online carries on after launch, and the Enhanced build is the one receiving current updates such as July 2026's Kortz Center Heist.

Whether any GTA Online progress will ever count in GTA 6 is something Rockstar hasn't addressed, and there's no historical precedent for it; our GTA Online to GTA 6 transfer piece has the detail. Either way, a final lap of Los Santos is worth it, and our things to do before GTA 6 list has the highlights. One last nudge on storage: GTA 5 Enhanced takes a sizeable chunk of PS5 SSD, and the GTA 6 preload opens on 12 November 2026.

What's still unconfirmed

Rockstar's Support article on migration was unreachable when we checked on 21 August 2026; the rules in this guide come from Rockstar's own posts on the PlayStation Blog and Xbox Wire (March 2022) and from Push Square's report on the free upgrade. Still unconfirmed: any deadline for the free PS5 upgrade or for Online migration (none announced, none ruled out); whether the Xbox Series upgrade is also free; whether Xbox disc owners are excluded; whether the PS4 character remains playable after migration; and whether the 2022 HSW migration bonus is still awarded.

Check these in-game: the upgrade price shows in the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store game hub, and the migration terms appear in the prompt the first time you launch the new version. We'll update this page as soon as Rockstar refreshes the support article or announces a cut-off.

FAQ

Can I transfer GTA 5 from PS4 to PS5?

Yes. Upload your Story Mode save to Rockstar's cloud from the PS4 pause menu and download it on PS5, then migrate your GTA Online character the first time you launch the PS5 version. Both steps need a Rockstar Games account linked to your PSN ID.

Is the GTA 5 free PS5 upgrade still available?

According to Push Square, yes: since 18 June 2026 every PS4 owner can download the PS5 version at no extra cost, disc or digital. It was a paid upgrade before that. Disc owners still need the Blu-ray in the drive every time they play.

How do I transfer my GTA 5 save from PS4 to PS5?

On PS4, open the pause menu in Story Mode, go to the Game tab and choose Upload Save Game. On PS5, download it from the same menu. Only one save per platform sits in the cloud at a time, and it's kept for 90 days.

Can I migrate my GTA Online character from PS4 to PS5 in 2026?

Yes, via a one-time migration offered when you first enter GTA Online on PS5. Characters, GTA$, progression, stats, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing and player-created jobs all transfer. Purchased GTA$ only moves within the PlayStation family.

What's the difference between GTA 5 Enhanced and Legacy?

Legacy is the older build for PS4, Xbox One and the original PC client. Enhanced is the newer build for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and, since March 2025, PC, with higher resolution, better frame rates, ray-tracing options and extras like Hao's Special Works. The two run separate online sessions.

Does the transfer work from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S too?

Yes. Rockstar confirmed a one-time migration of Story Mode progress and Online characters to Xbox Series X|S. Whether the Series upgrade is also free, and whether disc owners are excluded, is something we couldn't verify, so check the Microsoft Store listing.

Is there a deadline to transfer GTA 5 to PS5?

Rockstar hasn't announced one, but hasn't ruled one out either. The only firm limit is the uploaded Story Mode save, which stays in the cloud for 90 days. If you're switching before GTA 6, do the upload and download back to back.
