Rockstar Games Account checklist for GTA 6: link PSN or Xbox, lock it down, sort GTA+

The Rockstar Games Account (the service formerly branded Social Club) is your single login with Rockstar. It holds your GTA Online characters, ties your console accounts together and is where every support ticket lives. As far as anything official goes, the GTA 6 campaign doesn't require it: the PlayStation Store's own wording is that "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience", and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has announced an account requirement. What a Rockstar account does require today is concrete: GTA Online, a GTA+ membership, moving your GTA 5 story save from PS4 to PS5, and the rewards for linking a console account.

Why bother now, then? Because linking and the security settings are handled on Rockstar's website rather than in a console menu, and that's far easier at your desk than at midnight with a pad in your hand. Whether GTA 6 eventually gets an online mode that demands a Rockstar account is unconfirmed – Rockstar hasn't announced one. If your GTA Online progress matters to you, read what's actually known about carrying it into GTA 6 – the short answer is that nothing official exists yet.

Plenty of people own a Rockstar account without realising it – any GTA Online session on PS4 or Xbox One created one or demanded it. Check that first. Rockstar Support's advice is to search every inbox you own, spam folders included, for messages from the @rockstargames.com domain. If that turns up nothing, go to signin.rockstargames.com/forgotten-password and request a reset for each address you might have used; a reset email landing means you've found the account. Only create a fresh one at rockstargames.com once every attempt has drawn a blank.

When you do register, the email address matters more than anything else. Rockstar Support sets out specific requirements: an address you use regularly, not a university, school or work address, registered with a well-known provider and itself protected by two-factor authentication. The reasoning is blunt – if you lose access to that inbox, Rockstar Support may not be able to recover your account at all. Error code 1.500.7 during sign-up, according to Rockstar, usually points to exactly that kind of school or work address, or to a proxy or VPN being active.

Linking happens at rockstargames.com/account/connections. Rockstar's walkthrough (updated 23 June 2026) runs: sign in, press "Link" next to PlayStation or Xbox, confirm "Link Account", log in with Sony or Microsoft, pick how visible your platform profile should be, then "Continue". A confirmation email follows to the address on the account. You can attach several platform accounts to one Rockstar account – a PS5 and an Xbox side by side is fine. The reverse isn't: if your console is already tied to a different Rockstar account you'll hit the "Rockstar account is already linked" message, and the old link has to be removed first.

There's a tangible GTA Online payoff too. Per Rockstar's linking rewards FAQ of 28 May 2026, players who link a PlayStation or Xbox account and verify their email receive a one-time GTA$500,000, the Annis Elegy RH8 and the Sawed-Off Shotgun. The cash is paid into your Maze Bank account within 72 hours; the car and shotgun are free to collect at Legendary Motorsport and Ammu-Nation. It's strictly once per platform and only if that platform has never been linked to your Rockstar account before, so long-time linked players get nothing extra – but there's nothing to lose either.

Verifying your email address is compulsory before you can turn on two-factor protection, which Rockstar calls 2-Step Verification. The setup, per the support article updated 18 August 2026: sign in at rockstargames.com, select your account icon top right, then Account → Manage Account → Security. Scan the QR code with an authenticator app, or type the Secret Key in manually, enter the code from the app together with your password and select "Verify". Rockstar lists Twilio Authy, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and 1Password as compatible, on a phone or as a browser-based authenticator.

Two points get skipped surprisingly often. First, turn on cloud backup inside the authenticator app – Rockstar explicitly recommends it so that a lost phone doesn't become a locked account. Second, 2-Step Verification only guards changes to the Rockstar account itself. For in-game actions, a linked PSN or Xbox account carries the same privileges, which is why Rockstar advises enabling two-factor sign-in with Sony and Microsoft as well. Add a unique password that isn't reused anywhere else and you've covered the three routes through which accounts actually get lost.

Pre-order GTA 6 digitally and, according to Take-Two, you get a free month of GTA+ that's redeemable straight away. The UK PlayStation Store lists it as a "1-month GTA+ subscription with pre-order. Auto-renews." Sony's small print says the on-screen instructions at redemption will state the date on which the free month turns into a paid monthly subscription; existing subscribers have the month added on, and the offer can be claimed once per account regardless of further purchases. After that GTA+ costs £6.99 a month. Rockstar's own GTA+ page puts it simply: memberships renew monthly and can be cancelled at any time.

To cancel on PS5, per Sony: Settings → Users and Accounts → Account → Payment and Subscriptions → Subscriptions → pick the subscription → "Cancel Subscription". There's also Game and App Services → "Turn Off Auto-Renewal", or in a browser via Account Management → Subscription → "Cancel". The subscription stays active until the next payment date, then stops. On Xbox, cancellation runs through your Microsoft account under Services & subscriptions (account.microsoft.com/services) – we couldn't verify that exact menu path on a current Microsoft help page, so follow the store's instructions. Our advice: put the renewal date in your calendar the moment you redeem.

"Rockstar account is already linked": Rockstar says this mostly appears with QR-code sign-in when the console is already attached to another Rockstar account. You'll need to unlink it from the old account before the new link works – which means getting back into that old account, and is precisely why the hunt for old @rockstargames.com emails is worth it. If a verification or reset email never arrives, check spam and look for typos in the address; for error 1.500.7, Rockstar blames school or work addresses, proxies and VPNs. Safari users sometimes see error 1.300.11 while linking even though the link succeeded – the Connections page will tell you.

Nickname and email are changed at rockstargames.com/account. A nickname can only be changed once every 365 days, so if you fancy a new name for GTA 6, don't leave it until launch day. Email can be changed at any time, though Rockstar warns you may lose access to previous support requests. On that subject: Rockstar Support takes tickets around the clock via its request form, with replies by email – one more reason the address on file has to be one you can actually open.

1) Search your inboxes for @rockstargames.com, identify the existing account, otherwise register afresh. 2) At rockstargames.com/account check and verify the email address – it must be current, personal and protected by two-factor authentication itself. 3) At rockstargames.com/account/connections link PlayStation and/or Xbox and wait for the confirmation email. 4) Under Security enable 2-Step Verification with an authenticator app, switch on the app's cloud backup and store the Secret Key somewhere safe. 5) Check two-factor sign-in on your PSN and Microsoft accounts too.

6) Review your nickname – changes are limited to once every 365 days. 7) Privacy: choose your platform profile's visibility deliberately when linking, and use the Privacy options in account settings to review what personal data Rockstar holds. 8) If you pre-ordered digitally, redeem the GTA+ month only when you'll use it, and note the renewal date. 9) No Rockstar Games Launcher is needed on console – it's a PC application. 10) Done? Move on to the launch checklist and the preload guide.

Whether GTA 6 itself requires a Rockstar account is unconfirmed. The official copy describes a single-player experience; Rockstar hasn't announced an online mode for GTA 6, and reports of one arriving later are unverified. Equally open: whether GTA Online progress carries over in any form (it never has historically), whether there's crossplay, and whether the Rockstar Games Launcher ever plays a part on console. Also without an official source: linking rewards specific to GTA 6. Rockstar's current FAQ ties the GTA$500,000, Elegy and shotgun expressly to GTA Online in today's GTA 5, and nobody has said whether fresh incentives arrive for linked accounts at the GTA 6 launch. And we couldn't verify the Xbox cancellation route for GTA+ on a current Microsoft support page, which wouldn't load without a sign-in – the PS5, PS4 and browser steps, by contrast, come directly from Sony's help pages.
