GTA 6 age rating: PEGI status, what's in the game and a guide for UK parents

As of 21 August 2026, no rating board has issued a final classification. The UK PlayStation Store shows "PEGI Provisional 18", and the store's own FAQ adds that age ratings for Grand Theft Auto VI are unconfirmed at the time of writing. The PEGI database lists six entries for GTA V (all PEGI 18) and nothing for GTA VI. A provisional rating is the publisher's declared expectation for pre-order listings; the Games Rating Authority issues the actual certificate once it has examined the finished game, usually in the final weeks before launch.

The picture is the same elsewhere. Germany's PS Store displays "USK Rating Pending" with no USK database entry, and the US store carries "ESRB Rating Pending, Likely Mature 17+", an official ESRB marketing label that signals an expected M but is not a rating. Three boards, three pending statuses, one shared expectation: the top regular tier everywhere. For a UK buyer only the PEGI certificate matters; the ESRB and USK labels are useful context but carry no legal weight here.

So plan for PEGI 18. Every version of GTA V, from the 2013 PS3 release to the 2022 PS5 edition, received PEGI 18 with Violence and Bad Language descriptors. Rockstar's official synopsis for GTA 6 follows Jason, who works for drug runners in the Leonida Keys, and Lucia, fresh out of Leonida Penitentiary, after "an easy score goes wrong". A PEGI 16 would be a genuine surprise and nothing currently points to one.

The most reliable guide is the documented rating for GTA V. PEGI gave it 18 with Violence and Bad Language, plus In-Game Purchases; the PS5 version also carries Gambling because GTA Online has a casino. PEGI's own summaries describe frequent moderate to very strong violence, graphic injury, strong profanity, sexual content without visible genitalia and illegal drug use. The US board, the ESRB, spells it out further: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humour, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol.

In plain English: you play criminals who shoot, fight, steal cars and run people over, with visible blood. GTA V includes a mission in which the player carries out a torture scene. There are strip clubs with nudity, implied sex scenes, characters who take drugs and drink, and swearing throughout. Layered over all of it is the series' satire of adverts, politics and media, which adults often rate as the best part of GTA and which tends to go straight over a 12-year-old's head.

None of this has been formally assessed for GTA 6 yet. The characters Rockstar has officially introduced (a drug runner, an ex-prisoner, a strip-club owner, a veteran bank robber) and the two trailers suggest the same themes. The honest wording is therefore: GTA 6 is expected to receive descriptors similar to GTA V, and the final ones are still pending. Anything beyond that circulating from leaks is unconfirmed and should not shape your decision.

This is where the UK differs from the United States. Since 2012, PEGI 12, 16 and 18 ratings have been legally enforceable here under the Video Recordings Act 1984. Section 11 makes it an offence to supply, or offer to supply, a classified work to someone below the age on its certificate, and the Games Rating Authority (formerly the VSC Rating Board) is the statutory body that applies PEGI in the UK. A shop selling a PEGI 18 game to a 15-year-old is breaking the law, not just a store policy.

In practice that means an ID check at the till at GAME, Argos, Smyths or Currys, and age verification for online orders: Amazon.co.uk and other retailers typically require an adult to sign for 18-rated titles on delivery. The rule covers the boxed version of GTA 6 even though, according to Take-Two, the box contains only a download code and no disc. Digitally, the check is your account's date of birth: a child account on PlayStation or Xbox will not be offered a PEGI 18 title at all.

What the Act does not do is regulate your living room. The offence is about supply, not about a parent letting their own 16-year-old play alongside them at home. That remains a parental decision, and it is worth saying so plainly, because much of the anxiety in these conversations comes from a vague sense that it might be illegal. It is not. The real question is whether it is right for your child, which is different and harder.

On PS5, everything runs through Family Management. Your child needs their own child account linked to your adult account as family manager. Then, per PlayStation Support, go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, pick the child, and set "Age level for games and apps (PS5/PS4 and PS3)". PlayStation offers three presets, Child, Early Teens and Late Teens or Older, each of which you can fine-tune. With the age level set below 18, a PEGI 18 game can be neither bought nor launched on that account.

Two more toggles in the same menu are worth a minute. "Communication and User-Generated Content" switches off text messaging and voice chat with other players, while pre-written in-game messages stay allowed. The monthly spending limit for child accounts defaults to zero, so nothing can be bought until you deliberately raise it. One practical note from Sony's guide: if you change settings while your child is mid-game, they need to sign out and back in for the changes to take effect. Controls are tied to the account, not the console.

On Xbox the equivalent lives in family settings, either on the console under Settings > Account > Family settings or, more conveniently, in the Xbox Family Settings app on your phone. Microsoft filters games, apps and websites by the child's age using PEGI levels (3, 7, 12, 16, 18). Alongside that you get "Ask a Parent" for purchase requests, an allowance system, screen-time limits and controls over multiplayer, friends and chat. Until GTA 6 has a PEGI certificate, the content filter is what decides whether a child account can even see the listing.

Here is some genuinely reassuring news. The PlayStation Store and Take-Two both describe Grand Theft Auto VI as "a single-player experience", and the listing says "1 player". No online mode has been announced. On current information, GTA 6 at launch has no voice chat with strangers, no lobbies and nobody on a headset shouting at your child. The content of the game itself is the issue, not other players. Whether an online component follows later is unknown; we track that on GTA 6 Online release date.

GTA V and GTA Online are a different matter, and it matters because many teenagers already play exactly that. GTA Online has open voice and text chat, strangers in every session, in-game purchases (Shark Cards) and a casino, which is why PEGI added Gambling to the PS5 version. If your child already owns GTA V, locking down communication on their child account is more urgent than any debate about GTA 6. The same PS5 and Xbox switches described above cover both games.

If you decide to buy it, the age check always lands on you as the adult. In store you show ID at the till; for delivery you sign for the parcel yourself. The boxed version costs the same as digital, £69.99 for Standard and £89.99 for Ultimate, and per Take-Two contains a download code rather than a disc; it is due in shops from 12 November 2026 so that buyers can preload. The Christmas classic is a PlayStation or Xbox gift card. The important bit: the card itself is not age-checked, but the credit has to be redeemed on the account that makes the purchase. Put it on a child account and the money sits there unable to buy GTA 6, because the store will not offer an 18-rated title to that age. There is no clock ticking, either. The pre-order bonus (the Vintage Vice City Pack) applies to all purchases before 20 November 2026, and because there is no online mode, your child misses nothing if the game arrives a few months later or on an eighteenth birthday. If something still needs to go under the tree, a voucher for accessories or a game with a suitable rating is the calmer option, and GTA 6 stays on the table for later. First, some framing. A PEGI rating is a classification of content, not a verdict on your parenting. PEGI 18 means the board considers the content suitable only for adults; Ask About Games, the UK industry's parent site, notes that games at this level can contain very strong content including torture. That is a strong signal, but the board does not know your child and you do. The useful question is not "is this allowed" but "is this right for my child, now".

Three questions help. First: what is the appeal? Often it is friends, cars and the open world rather than the violence, and other games scratch that itch. Second: how does your child handle hard content today, in TV series, in GTA V round a friend's house, in conversation? Third: can you play or watch the first few hours together? A good halfway step is watching the trailers and, on 27 August at 8pm BST, the Extended Look on Netflix as a family. You will both see what the game actually is.

If the answer is yes: install it on the adult account, start together, agree time rules and a spending limit, and talk about the satire and the violence rather than pretending they aren't there. If the answer is no: explain it with the content, not the sticker, and name a date to revisit it. A clear no with reasons lands better with most teenagers than a vague maybe. And if your child already plays it at a friend's house, an honest conversation beats a ban that only holds at home.

Every final rating is still open: the Games Rating Authority has not certified GTA 6, PEGI shows only a provisional 18 on the PlayStation Store, the USK has not examined it and the ESRB lists Rating Pending with an expected M. No official content descriptors exist for GTA 6 yet; everything above about violence, sex, drugs and language refers to GTA V and to the themes Rockstar has officially presented.
