Is GTA 5 still worth playing in 2026, three months before GTA 6?

If you have never touched GTA 5, the answer is yes, and it has nothing to do with GTA 6. Over 230 million copies sold (Take-Two, August 7, 2026) make it the biggest entry in the franchise, and it is still the reference point for Rockstar's open-world design: three playable protagonists, heists you plan before you pull them, and a satirical Los Santos that holds up in 2026. At $39.99 list, often much less on sale, or as part of PS Plus Extra, you will not find better value. You get the humor, the mission structure and the mechanics that define the series. Think of it as the ideal primer, not a prerequisite.

If you played it years ago on PS3, PS4 or Xbox One, rebuying is usually a waste. Own a PS4 copy? The PS5 version is free: reports say Rockstar brought back the no-cost upgrade in June 2026, along with a one-time migration of Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters. If you just want the plot back in your head, a recap takes ten minutes; if you want another lap around Los Santos, your old copy still runs. No spending required either way.

If you are an active GTA Online player, the real question is whether to keep investing time and money. GTA Online is not winding down: the Kortz Center Heist, the latest major update, shipped July 14, 2026, and weekly events keep landing every Thursday. Take-Two's official language calls GTA 6 a single-player experience, and Rockstar has announced no online mode for it. Your character is staying put for the foreseeable future. What you should not do is grind on the assumption that any of it moves to GTA 6. Details on that further down.

On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the Enhanced version has been the default since March 15, 2022: faster loading, performance modes, and additional GTA Online content. PC got its Enhanced release on March 4, 2025, free for existing PC owners. On the US PS Store, Grand Theft Auto V (PS4 & PS5) lists at $39.99 (checked August 21, 2026), and the standalone Grand Theft Auto Online for PS5 at $19.99. GTA 5 is also in the PS Plus Extra Game Catalog right now, though Sony never commits to how long. GTA V Enhanced lists at $29.99 on Steam. Xbox Store pricing is set separately; expect comparable numbers and regular discounts.

Sales come around constantly. In June 2026 the PS Store reportedly had GTA 5 down to $19.79, and deals like that repeat several times a year, so patience pays. For a physical copy, Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart and Target carry PS5 and Xbox Series versions; prices and stock change constantly, which is why we are not quoting any here. The labels confuse a lot of shoppers, but the system is straightforward. Legacy is last generation: PS4, Xbox One and the original PC release. Enhanced is the current build for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Purchase Grand Theft Auto V (PS4 & PS5) on the PS Store and you get both in a single buy, with no separate upgrade step. The Premium Edition you still find at retail is the base game bundled with a 2018 GTA Online starter pack. It is not a superior version, just the last-gen game with extras. Have a PS4 disc? Insert it in the PS5, download the upgrade from the store, run the one-time migration. Requirements and pitfalls live in that guide. On Xbox, confirm first which versions are eligible for migration, since the rules are not identical to PlayStation's. For first-time buyers, go digital on the console you actually own so you get Enhanced immediately. Skip the standalone GTA Online if you want the campaign; it does not include Story Mode. On PC, the regular GTA V is all you need, because Enhanced is bundled in.

Plan on about 30 hours for the main story, around 50 hours if you add the side content worth doing, and well over 80 hours for full completion. Those are community ballpark estimates rather than official figures, and they swing widely depending on how you play. With roughly 13 weeks left before November 19, two to three hours a week is enough to finish the campaign at a relaxed pace, and one free weekend a month adds room for the heists and side missions. There is no reason to rush, and plenty of reason not to: the heists and the character missions are the best parts.

Pressed for time? Prioritize the prologue and the opening missions for each of the three protagonists, then the heists, then the finale. The Strangers & Freaks missions are great but optional. GTA Online can be skipped entirely if you only care about the story, and you need zero story knowledge to jump into Online. The worst move right now is dumping money or weeks into GTA Online because you expect something to carry over to GTA 6. Nothing official supports that. As of August 21, 2026, Rockstar has said nothing about transferring characters, GTA$ or unlocks, and has not announced an online mode for GTA 6 in the first place. Precedent cuts the other way: nothing carried over from GTA IV to GTA V, or from Red Dead Redemption to RDR2. We track the current status in GTA Online transfer to GTA 6.

Second, do not stockpile Shark Cards. That balance belongs to GTA Online inside GTA 5, not to some future game. Third, Take-Two says a digital GTA 6 pre-order comes with a free month of GTA+, which auto-renews afterward at $7.99 a month. That is a perk tied to today's GTA Online, not a reason to buy GTA 5 and not evidence that the two games are linked. If you do not want the renewal, turn it off in your subscription settings.

If you would rather set the mood for Leonida than Los Santos, GTA: Vice City (2002) is the more relevant pick. It takes place in the same fictional city, Rockstar's version of Miami, during the 1980s. These days it is only available inside GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition or as a standalone Definitive Edition; list prices vary by platform and the bundle goes on sale frequently. Expect a retro experience: the Definitive Edition updated the visuals, but the controls are from another era. Rockstar has not said whether GTA 6 references any characters or events from that game; the Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus reportedly borrows the era's style and nothing more.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) is Rockstar's newest game and the best available preview of how a modern Rockstar title feels: mission design, animation, density of the world. If you want to understand what the studio builds today, it teaches you more than GTA 5 can. But it is a slow western epic of 50-plus hours, not a warm-up act for GTA 6. Our call: newcomers play GTA 5, mood-seekers play Vice City, Rockstar fans with spare time play RDR2, and anyone who only wants Leonida just lets the 90 days run out.

Never played: buy it, ideally digital on sale or through PS Plus Extra; verdict: clearly worth it. Played years ago, still own a PS4 copy: do not rebuy, take the free PS5 upgrade or read the recap; verdict: worth it at no cost. Active Online player: keep playing, but grind and buy nothing in anticipation of GTA 6; verdict: yes, with an asterisk. Only here for GTA 6: wait, lock in your pre-order and preload; verdict: no, not needed. About 30 hours of story fits easily into the 13 weeks left. GTA 5 is a great buy, but it is not a ticket to Leonida.

Bottom line: if you want an excellent game for not much money, buy GTA 5 Enhanced and play the story. If your goal is to be ready for GTA 6, Los Santos is the wrong place to prepare. The real prep is your console, your storage space and your Rockstar account. Undecided? Hold off for the next sale or look at the PS Plus Extra catalog first. At $20 or less the risk is minimal, even if ten hours in you realize you would rather wait for Leonida. The one truly bad call is spending money in GTA Online today because you are betting on a carry-over that nobody has announced.

Second: whether GTA 6 has an online mode at all; official copy describes it as a single-player experience.
