GTA 6 online release date: does GTA 6 have multiplayer at launch, and when could GTA 6 Online arrive?
Quick answer

With roughly 90 days to go, the question we see most often after "how much is it" is "can I play GTA 6 with my mates?" The honest answer is short: officially, no – and Rockstar has said nothing at all about an online mode coming later. At the same time, rumours about a December launch and about crossplay keep doing the rounds. This page separates what Rockstar and Take-Two have actually said from what the gaming press infers and what is pure speculation. We keep it current and will update the moment there is an official statement – the next realistic opportunity is the Netflix "Extended Look" on 27 August 2026 at 8pm BST.
Is GTA 6 single-player only? What is officially confirmed
The official description is unambiguous and identical across every storefront: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." That exact line appears on the PlayStation Store and in Take-Two's pre-order press release of 24 June 2026. The US store listing goes further, showing "1 player", "Offline play enabled" and "Remote Play supported". No official text mentions an online mode, multiplayer or co-op. That is the position as of 21 August 2026, and it is reliable because it comes straight from the first parties rather than from leaks or insiders.
It matters what this wording does not say. It does not rule out an online mode arriving later – but it does not announce one either. Everything Rockstar has shown so far is about Jason and Lucia's story: two trailers, character pages, cover art, editions. The only online-related item in the pre-order package is a free month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders, and Take-Two ties that explicitly to "the ever-evolving world of GTA Online" – the existing GTA Online attached to GTA 5, not anything new inside GTA 6.
Both editions are story packages too. The Ultimate Edition "amplifies this experience" with premium vehicles, weapons and apparel that, per the official blurb, run through Jason and Lucia's story. The reported contents – cars, a garage, shop access, two side missions – all belong to the campaign; no source mentions an online bonus or starting cash of any kind. If you are paying the extra £20 (£89.99 versus £69.99) expecting online perks, you are buying on an assumption, not a promise. The premium only makes sense if the story extras themselves are worth it to you.
What the reports and rumours say about GTA 6 Online
The gaming press reads the store wording as a sign of a single-player-only launch. Push Square wrote on 24 June 2026 that GTA 6 "will be a 'single player experience' when it launches on 19th November" and that "there's currently no word on GTA Online, as Rockstar places all its marketing attention on Jason and Lucia's story". That is the outlet's own analysis rather than a Rockstar quote – the article contains no statement from the studio about online and draws its conclusion from the marketing and from history. Read it that way: plausible, not official.
Separately, a specific date circulates on forums and social media: an online mode in December 2026, a few weeks after launch. We could not find a credible source for it – no Rockstar statement and no report from a reputable outlet with a traceable origin. It is a rumour that copies the GTA 5 timeline onto GTA 6. We list it here because people search for it, and we rate it unconfirmed.
Take-Two's own comments are indirect. CEO Strauss Zelnick told IGN in February 2025 – stressing he was speaking "theoretically only" because nothing had been announced – that Take-Two supports its properties as long as players are engaged with them. On the 7 August 2026 earnings call he talked about sustaining the new level of scale "for the next several years". Both are widely read as hints at long-term online plans; neither names a GTA 6 online mode.
Precedent: when did GTA Online follow GTA 5, and Red Dead Online follow RDR2?
Rockstar launched its last two big games without an online component and added it shortly afterwards. GTA 5 released on 17 September 2013; GTA Online went live on 1 October 2013, exactly two weeks later. That launch was rough – overloaded servers, lost characters and days of problems before Rockstar stabilised things. Red Dead Redemption 2 released on 26 October 2018; the Red Dead Online beta opened in stages from 27 November 2018 (Ultimate Edition owners first, everyone from 30 November) and only left beta on 14 May 2019.
From that, many people conclude a GTA 6 online mode could appear one to six weeks after 19 November 2026. That is an expectation drawn from a pattern, not a forecast with a source behind it. Two things are different in 2026. GTA Online is now a multi-billion-pound business with weekly updates that Take-Two has no obvious reason to replace, and Rockstar has not so much as hinted that an online mode is in development. In 2013, GTA Online was announced well before release; there is nothing comparable this time.
Our reading: an online mode at launch on 19 November can be ruled out on the official evidence. Everything after that is open – anything from "a few weeks later" to "not in this form at all" is conceivable, and none of it has a source. If multiplayer is your main reason to buy, either wait for an announcement or buy knowingly for the story. A pre-order is not a lock-in either: Take-Two itself pointed out on 7 August 2026 that "you can cancel a pre-order", with the exact deadlines set by each store.
Will GTA 6 have crossplay or cross-progression?
There is not a single official statement on crossplay – not from Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony or Microsoft. The question is largely theoretical for now because no online mode exists to be cross-platform. If one arrives, crossplay would initially only concern PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as no PC version has been announced. The store listing offers nothing either: it mentions neither online play nor crossplay, which fits the single-player description. Any claim that crossplay is "confirmed" or "ruled out" comes from leaks or forum posts and is therefore unconfirmed.
History leans against it. GTA Online has never offered crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC in more than twelve years, and Red Dead Online has always kept platforms separate. Rockstar has never publicly addressed the topic. That does not mean GTA 6 will follow suit – plenty of publishers have changed course since 2018 – but without a statement, crossplay stays "unconfirmed" in our book, not "likely".
Cross-progression, meaning one save shared between PS5 and Xbox, is likewise unannounced. The same goes for carrying GTA Online progress, GTA$ or rank into a hypothetical GTA 6 Online: there is no statement either way, and Rockstar has never transferred progress between games before (not GTA IV to V, not Red Dead to RDR2). We cover the details and what is worth doing now in GTA Online transfer to GTA 6.
GTA 6 split-screen co-op: can two people play together?
Not as far as anyone knows. The store listing says "1 player", and no official text mentions co-op, local multiplayer or split-screen. Having two playable protagonists changes nothing here: Rockstar presents Jason and Lucia as part of a story you play alone, and a two-player mode has never been mentioned. Some read Rockstar's phrase "Jason and Lucia's story" – one shared story – as a co-op hint. There is no evidence for that: GTA 5 had three protagonists in Michael, Franklin and Trevor, and you controlled all of them on your own.
The series has not had local co-op in decades. GTA: San Andreas (2004) on PS2 and Xbox included a mode that let two players roam the world together. GTA IV (2008) and GTA 5 (2013) dropped it entirely; Rockstar moved everything social into its online modes. GTA 6 taking a different path would be a genuine surprise – but it has not been officially ruled out, so we file it as "not announced".
What the listing does support is Remote Play, streaming from your PS5 to another device. Whether Sony's Share Play (handing the controller to a friend over the internet) is enabled for GTA 6 is up to the developer, and nothing has been said. Do not plan on playing together in the traditional sense. In practice, "playing GTA 6 with a mate" currently means passing the pad or taking turns – the same as any other single-player game. The moment Rockstar announces otherwise, it will be here.
What happens to GTA Online when GTA 6 comes out?
GTA Online carries on – this is the one point that is reasonably solid. It received another major update on 14 July 2026, the "Kortz Center Heist Summer Update", weekly updates still land every Thursday (most recently the "Brand Wars" event of 20–26 August 2026), and Take-Two markets the free GTA+ month from GTA 6 pre-orders as a way into the existing GTA Online. Nobody has announced a shutdown or an end to support.
What is open is how long GTA Online keeps receiving new content after 19 November 2026. Zelnick's 2025 remark that Take-Two keeps older titles running alongside new ones while players are still there was deliberately general. Our advice for the final 90 days: finish anything you want to finish in GTA Online now, make sure your Rockstar account is properly linked, and do not assume any of it will carry into GTA 6.
What this means for your purchase: PS5 or Xbox?
Until crossplay is confirmed, the old rule applies: buy GTA 6 on the console your friends use. If an online mode arrives later and Rockstar sticks to its past approach, you would otherwise end up in separate worlds. If you mostly play solo, choose freely on hardware and price – our comparison GTA 6: PS5 vs Xbox walks through the differences. Pricing is identical on both stores: £69.99 Standard, £89.99 Ultimate.
On editions: none of the reported Ultimate Edition contents is an online bonus; all of it relates to the story. Whether the £20 premium is still worth it is the subject of Is the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition worth it?. And if you pre-order a boxed copy from Amazon.co.uk, Argos, GAME, Currys or Smyths, remember the box contains a download code rather than a disc, according to Take-Two – which makes no difference to the online question either way.
What is still unconfirmed – and when we will update this page
As of 21 August 2026 the following are unconfirmed: an online mode for GTA 6 (its existence and its timing), the December rumour, crossplay between PS5 and Xbox, cross-progression, co-op or split-screen, any carry-over of GTA Online progress, and the future of GTA Online beyond the current update cycle. What is confirmed is only the negative: GTA 6 is sold as a single-player game listed for "1 player", and GTA Online is currently still running.
The next moment this could change is the "Extended Look" on 27 August 2026 at 8pm BST on Netflix (Rockstar's own channels follow at 2am BST on 28 August). We will update this page as soon as Rockstar, Take-Two or a platform store publishes something new, and link the source right here. Launch-day server issues are tracked separately on our server status page.

FAQ
Does GTA 6 have multiplayer?
Not officially. Rockstar and Take-Two describe GTA 6 as "a single-player experience" and the store lists "1 player". No multiplayer or online mode has been announced, for launch or later.
When is the GTA 6 online release date?
There is no date. GTA Online followed GTA 5 by two weeks in 2013 and the Red Dead Online beta followed RDR2 by about a month, but that is a pattern, not an announcement. A December 2026 date circulates as an unsourced rumour.
Will GTA 6 have GTA Online?
Nothing has been announced. The existing GTA Online keeps running and receiving updates, and the pre-order GTA+ month applies to it. Whether GTA 6 gets its own online mode is unknown as of 21 August 2026.
Is there GTA 6 multiplayer at launch?
No. On the official evidence GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 as a single-player game. If you want multiplayer, wait for an announcement before buying.
Is GTA 6 cross platform?
There is no official statement on crossplay. GTA Online and Red Dead Online never supported it. Until Rockstar says otherwise, play on the console your friends use.
Will GTA 6 have crossplay?
Unknown. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two, Sony or Microsoft has said anything, and there is no online mode announced for crossplay to apply to. Treat any claim as unconfirmed.
Does GTA 6 have split-screen co-op?
Not announced. The store listing says "1 player". The last GTA with local two-player was San Andreas in 2004; GTA IV and GTA 5 had no split-screen. Rockstar has not ruled it out, but there is no sign of it.
Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 releases?
Nothing suggests that. GTA Online had a major update in July 2026 and weekly events continue. Take-Two said in 2025 that it keeps older titles running while players remain engaged.
