GTA 5 story recap: the plot and endings explained before GTA 6 arrives
Quick answer

With roughly 90 days to go until 19 November 2026, plenty of people are playing GTA 5 for the first time or giving it one last run, and many wonder whether the 2013 story is required reading for GTA 6. This page settles that question and then recaps the plot in tiers, so you choose how much you want to know: the setup and the cast without spoilers, then the main arc and the three endings in clearly marked spoiler sections. We also cover where GTA Online sits on the timeline, what officially connects to GTA 6 (nothing, so far) and whether a playthrough is worth your time right now.
Do you need GTA 5's story for GTA 6?
No. Rockstar's own description of GTA 6 frames it as a self-contained story that follows Jason and Lucia after an easy score goes wrong, pulling them into a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida. The setting is Vice City and the wider state, not Los Santos. Every character revealed so far is new: alongside the two leads there are Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, Raul Bautista and Brian Heder, among others. Not one GTA 5 character has been announced for GTA 6. If you skipped GTA 5 entirely, there is no backstory you'd be missing based on what's public today.
That said, GTA 5 is still the best warm-up available. It established the modern template Rockstar keeps refining: a big open state, wanted levels, planned heists with a crew, and swapping between protagonists. Its satirical radio stations, fake adverts and in-world brands such as Vapid and Grotti belong to the same universe GTA 6 lives in. If you want to feel at home the moment the game unlocks on 19 November 2026, GTA 5 gets you there quickest. You'll understand GTA 6 either way.
The spoiler-free setup: Michael, Franklin and Trevor
GTA 5 launched on 17 September 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360, followed by PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, PC in 2015 and PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2022. Take-Two put lifetime sales at more than 230 million units in August 2026, which makes it one of the best-selling games ever made. It's set in Los Santos, Rockstar's take on Los Angeles, and the rural Blaine County that surrounds it, both within the fictional state of San Andreas.
The big structural idea in 2013 was three playable protagonists you can switch between almost at will. Michael De Santa is a retired bank robber living in a Rockford Hills mansion, miserable with his family and himself. Franklin Clinton is a young repo man from South Los Santos trying to escape gang life. Trevor Philips is Michael's old partner in crime, a volatile drug dealer based in the desert town of Sandy Shores. The story brings the three together and, through a series of escalating robberies, sets them against corrupt federal agents, a billionaire and several gangs. That's all you need if you'd rather stay spoiler-free.
The plot act by act (spoilers)
⚠ Spoiler warning: story detailsOnly expand if you want the details
Prologue, 2004: Michael, Trevor and their partner Brad rob a bank in Ludendorff, North Yankton. It goes wrong, Michael is shot and presumed dead. In truth he has cut a deal with FIB agent Dave Norton: he disappears into Los Santos under a new name with his family, Brad dies, and Trevor escapes believing for nine years that Michael was killed. That secret is the engine of the whole story; everything that happens in 2013 eventually leads back to it.
2013: Franklin is repossessing cars for dealer Simeon Yetarian when a job leads him to Michael's son Jimmy, and through him to Michael. The bored ex-crook takes Franklin under his wing. When Michael catches his wife Amanda with her tennis coach, he tears down the deck of a house in a rage, a house that belongs to cartel boss Martin Madrazo. To pay off the debt, Michael plans a jewellery store robbery with hacker and planner Lester Crest. Trevor sees the news coverage in Sandy Shores and recognises a single line: Michael is alive.
Trevor heads to Los Santos, the old crew reunites, and so does the old distrust. At the same time, the three get pulled into the FIB's machinery: Norton and his superior Steve Haines force Michael to do their dirty work, from snatching a witness held by the rival IAA to raiding an FIB building, with a bank job in Paleto Bay along the way to fund the equipment. In parallel, billionaire Devin Weston uses Franklin and Michael for car thefts and later puts Michael's family in mortal danger over a film project that doesn't go his way.
The breaking point comes when Trevor travels to North Yankton, digs up Michael's grave and finds Brad inside. The truth about 2004 is out, and Trevor would happily see Michael dead. Shortly afterwards Michael is kidnapped by Wei Cheng's Triads and Franklin pulls him out. Despite everything, the crew, with Lester planning, pulls off its biggest job: the gold bullion heist at the Union Depository, the city's vault. Then Franklin faces the choice that decides the finale.
The three endings explained (spoilers)
⚠ Spoiler warning: story detailsOnly expand if you want the details
After the big score, Franklin receives two demands: Steve Haines wants Trevor dead, Devin Weston wants Michael gone. The game presents three options: A 'Kill Trevor', B 'Kill Michael' and C 'Deathwish'. Your pick decides who makes it to the credits. Option A (the mission 'Something Sensible'): Franklin confronts Trevor, with Michael joining the chase. Trevor dies, the remaining two drift apart, and Trevor is no longer playable. Option B ('The Time's Come'): Franklin lures Michael to a power station, a fight follows and Michael falls to his death. Both endings leave a broken crew behind and are deliberately bleak.
Option C ('The Third Way') is the ending most players treat as the real one: the three decide to fight everyone together rather than sacrifice one of their own. They repel an assault by the FIB and Merryweather at a foundry, then work through their enemies one by one: Stretch, Wei Cheng, Steve Haines and Devin Weston. All three protagonists survive, Michael stays with his family, and this is the only ending that lets you keep playing as all three afterwards. Rockstar has never declared any ending canon.
Where GTA Online sits on the timeline
GTA Online launched on 1 October 2013, two weeks after the story. Rockstar originally placed the multiplayer a few months before the single-player events: your created character arrives in Los Santos while familiar faces such as Lester, Lamar and Trevor hand out jobs. There's no strict chronology, though. Later updates are clearly set years after the story and even bring Franklin back as a contact. Think of GTA Online as a loose parallel world, not a sequel.
For understanding GTA 6, GTA Online is entirely optional. Its main draw is the heists, which have evolved Rockstar's heist design over the years, from the first Heists update in 2015 through Doomsday, the Diamond Casino and Cayo Perico to the Kortz Center Heist released in July 2026. How Rockstar will carry GTA Online forward after GTA 6 launches, and whether anything at all transfers, has not been announced. Plan on nothing carrying over.
What connects GTA 5 to GTA 6, and what doesn't
Officially confirmed: nothing. So far Rockstar has talked only about new characters, the new setting and Jason and Lucia, with not a word about Los Santos. The studio has announced neither returning GTA 5 characters nor any continuation of its storyline. Anything you read about 'Michael in Vice City' or similar cameos is rumour or wishful thinking, so file it as unconfirmed. The year GTA 6 is set in, and how it relates to GTA 5's timeframe, hasn't been stated either.
What counts as general knowledge: since GTA IV in 2008, Rockstar has told its stories in what fans call the HD era, sharing brands, companies, radio stations and satire across games. The GTA 6 pre-order bonus reportedly including a Vapid Stanier, a car brand you'll know from GTA 5, fits that pattern. Vice City itself was last a setting in 2002, in the older 3D era. GTA 6 shows a new version of the city, not a sequel to that game. So the only context worth bringing is 'same universe, same sense of humour'.
Should you play GTA 5 now?
If you have the time, yes. The main story takes around 30 hours depending on pace, and considerably longer with side content and exploration. That fits comfortably before 19 November 2026, and you'll go into GTA 6 with a proper feel for how Rockstar tells a story. If you only have time for the main missions, that's fine; the story works without the side content. For a fuller weigh-up with a schedule, read Should I play GTA 5 before GTA 6?.
On the technical side, the PS5 and Xbox Series version (GTA V Enhanced, out since March 2022) is the one to play: faster loading and better graphics modes. If you own the PS4 version, you can migrate your story progress and GTA Online character to PS5 in a one-time transfer, and Rockstar reportedly made the upgrade free again in June 2026. Our guide GTA 5 PS4 to PS5 transfer walks through it. GTA V is regularly discounted on the PlayStation Store and is currently in the PS Plus Extra catalogue (line-ups change). Retailers such as Amazon.co.uk, GAME, Argos or Smyths also stock disc versions; prices vary.
What's still unconfirmed
Not official: any link between GTA 6's plot and GTA 5, returning characters, the year GTA 6 is set in, an online mode for GTA 6, and any transfer of GTA Online progress. Which of GTA 5's three endings Rockstar considers canon has never been confirmed either; Option C is fan consensus, not a studio statement. What the Netflix 'Extended Look' reveals on 27 August 2026 (8pm BST) we'll only know that evening. If Rockstar confirms any of the above, this page will be updated.

FAQ
Do I need to play GTA 5 before GTA 6?
No. GTA 6 tells a new story about Jason and Lucia in Leonida, while GTA 5 is set in Los Santos with a different cast. Rockstar has announced no story link. GTA 5 is still worth playing to get a feel for the series' tone and mechanics.
What is the GTA 5 story about?
Three criminals team up in Los Santos: retired bank robber Michael, young up-and-comer Franklin and the unpredictable Trevor. Across a series of heists they end up caught between corrupt federal agents, a billionaire and several gangs. The spoiler-free setup above has more.
How many endings does GTA 5 have?
Three. In the final mission you make a choice as Franklin that decides the outcome. Rockstar has never said which ending is canon. The details are in the marked spoiler section above.
Is the GTA 5 story connected to GTA 6?
Not officially. Both games share a universe with the same brands and humour, but Rockstar has confirmed neither returning characters nor a continuation of the plot. Every rumour on that front is unconfirmed.
Is GTA Online set before or after GTA 5?
Rockstar originally set GTA Online a few months before the story, but later updates are clearly years after it. There is no strict chronology. For GTA 6, GTA Online is optional anyway.
Will Michael, Franklin or Trevor be in GTA 6?
That is unconfirmed. Rockstar has only revealed new characters for GTA 6. Anything circulating about cameos or returning protagonists comes from rumours and should be treated as unconfirmed.
