GTA Online transfer to GTA 6: does your progress, money, and character carry over?
Quick answer

About 90 days out from November 19, 2026, the same question is everywhere: what happens to all the time you put into GTA Online? The bunker, the car collection, the millions in Maze Bank. The straight answer is that Rockstar has said nothing, and that silence is the whole story right now. This page keeps a dated log of what was actually said, walks through how Rockstar handled its previous sequels, and spells out what that means for your wallet between now and launch. When Rockstar finally talks, this page gets updated the same day.
Does GTA Online progress transfer to GTA 6?
There is no official answer. Through August 21, 2026, neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has said that characters, GTA$, rank, or vehicles from GTA Online will transfer into GTA 6, and neither has said they will not. That is worth stressing, because you will find both claims stated as fact on Reddit and YouTube. Both are guesses. The one official description of GTA 6, on the PlayStation Store and in Take-Two's June 24, 2026 press release, is a "single-player experience" set in the state of Leonida. No GTA 6 online mode has been announced, so at the moment there is nowhere for a transfer to land.
What you can point to is indirect. Back in February 2025, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick got the GTA-Online-after-GTA-6 question. Per GamingBible, he prefaced his answer by saying he would speak "theoretically" because he would not comment on an unannounced project, then said: "We support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles." That is about keeping a game running, not about migrating your account. The June 24, 2026 press release describes the free GTA+ month for digital pre-orders as the best way into the "ever-evolving world of GTA Online." Same thing: a signal that today's GTA Online continues, zero information about carry-over.
Then on August 7, 2026, in the Q1 FY27 earnings release, Zelnick said Take-Two expects to "sustain this new level of scale and generate strong cash flows" over the coming years. A lot of people read that as online revenue continuing, and recurrent consumer spending was 84 percent of net bookings that quarter. Still, that is inference. Where we land: carry-over is unconfirmed, and there is no statement in either direction.
What Rockstar did the last three times
Rockstar's track record splits cleanly into two categories. Category one: a brand-new game. When GTA V shipped in 2013, nothing came over from GTA IV, multiplayer included. When Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in 2018, nothing came over from the original Red Dead Redemption, and Red Dead Online started everyone at zero. Category two: the same game on new hardware. Those transfers happened. In 2014, GTA Online players moved their character from PS3 and Xbox 360 to PS4 and Xbox One, then to PC in 2015. Since March 2022, there has been a PS4/Xbox One to PS5/Xbox Series migration, which the PlayStation Store calls a "one-time migration" for Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters.
That split is the key to the whole question. A console-generation jump is the same game with the same economy, the same items, and the same price tags. GTA 6 is a different game with a different map, a different car list, and almost certainly a different economy built from scratch. A garage full of Los Santos supercars would not even make sense in Vice City. Could Rockstar do something anyway? Sure. But going by every precedent, the likeliest outcome is no transfer, with maybe a small thank-you for longtime players. More on that next.
What it means for your money and Shark Cards
One rule covers it: do not buy Shark Cards because of GTA 6. Nobody has promised that even one GTA$ makes the trip, and every precedent says it will not. If you buy a Shark Card, do it because you want to enjoy GTA Online this month, whether that is running the Kortz Center Heist or grinding the weekly events. That is a fine reason. It is just a reason for right now, not for November. If you would rather keep your launch budget intact, the gift card trick for GTA 6 usually buys you more than another Megalodon card.
GTA+ works the same way. It runs $7.99 a month, and the free month that comes with digital pre-orders auto-renews unless you cancel it. Its perks apply to today's GTA Online and the GTA+ games library, not to GTA 6. Rumors about legacy rewards, meaning GTA 6 bonuses for players with a long Online history or a linked Rockstar Games account, never stop. Rockstar has done a small version of this before: completing the GTA Online treasure hunt unlocked the Double-Action Revolver in RDR2. Nothing like it has been announced for GTA 6. We file it under unconfirmed speculation, nothing more.
Is GTA Online shutting down?
No. Nothing like that has been announced, and everything visible points the other way. GTA Online is still getting content. The Kortz Center Heist Summer Update arrived July 14, 2026, and Take-Two called it out by name in its August 7 earnings release. Weekly events keep rolling every Thursday; this week it is the Brand Wars event from August 20 through 26, 2026. GTA V is still on sale on the PlayStation Store for PS4 and PS5 at $39.99, and standalone GTA Online for PS5 is $19.99. A game you can still buy today, that just got a new heist, is not getting unplugged in three months.
Rockstar has shut GTA Online down exactly once: the PS3 and Xbox 360 servers went dark in December 2021, more than eight years after launch and with roughly six months of warning. That is the template. If the PS4 and Xbox One servers are ever retired, that history suggests months of notice, not a surprise on launch day. Rockstar reopening the free PS5 upgrade and simplified migration in June 2026 looks like an effort to move players to current-gen consoles ahead of GTA 6. But no end date has been set for any platform.
What to do before November 19, 2026
First, treat your GTA Online progress as exactly what it is: progress in GTA Online. If you still have goals, that last heist, the missing car, rank 500, knock them out now because you want to, not because they will count later. Our things to do before GTA 6 list covers what is still worth the grind. Second, link your PSN or Xbox account to a Rockstar Games account if you have not, and turn on two-step verification. Migration requires it, and a linked account is the only realistic hook for any future veteran reward, if one ever exists. Our Rockstar account checklist walks through every step.
Third, if you are still playing on PS4 or Xbox One, migrate to PS5 or Xbox Series. The PlayStation Store calls it a one-time migration, the PS5 upgrade has been free since June 2026, and only the Enhanced version gets all the current content. Nobody knows whether there is a migration deadline, so moving before launch is the safe call. Our PS4-to-PS5 transfer guide covers the steps and the exceptions, including the different rules for Xbox disc copies. Fourth, plan on GTA 6 being a clean slate. Show up November 19 expecting nothing to carry over, and the only surprise left is a good one.
What's still unconfirmed
Basically everything that makes this question interesting is still open. Unconfirmed: whether GTA 6 gets an online mode at all, when it would show up, and whether it would be built into GTA 6 or sold as a separate product. Reports of "no online at launch" or "online in December 2026" come from analysts and press, not from Rockstar. Unconfirmed: any kind of transfer, whether money, character, rank, vehicles, or cosmetics. Unconfirmed: legacy rewards for veterans. Unconfirmed: an end date for GTA Online on any platform, or a deadline for the PS4-to-PS5 migration.
What is locked in: GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, is officially described as a single-player experience, and GTA Online keeps getting updates. On August 27, 2026, Netflix streams "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" at 3 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. PT. Whether it says anything about online is unknown. This page gets updated, with date and source, the moment Rockstar or Take-Two says anything about transfers, an online mode, or the future of the servers.

FAQ
Will GTA Online progress transfer to GTA 6?
Not as far as anyone knows. As of August 21, 2026, Rockstar and Take-Two have said nothing for or against it, and no Rockstar sequel (GTA IV to V, RDR to RDR2) has ever carried progress forward. Treat GTA 6 as a fresh start.
Does GTA 5 money carry over to GTA 6?
Nothing suggests it will. GTA$ lives inside GTA Online, and no Rockstar sequel has ever moved in-game cash to the next game. Skip Shark Cards if GTA 6 is the reason; buy them only if you plan to spend them now.
Is there a GTA 6 character transfer?
No. Nothing like that has been promised. GTA 6 stars Jason and Lucia as fixed protagonists, and no online mode has been announced. Your Online character stays in GTA Online, which keeps running.
What happens to GTA Online when GTA 6 comes out?
Everything Take-Two has said points to it continuing. The June 2026 press release calls GTA Online "ever-evolving," and Zelnick said in 2025 that Take-Two supports titles while players stay engaged. A specific post-launch roadmap has not been published.
Is GTA Online shutting down?
No shutdown has been announced. GTA Online got the Kortz Center Heist in July 2026 and still receives weekly updates. The only shutdown ever was PS3 and Xbox 360 in December 2021, with about six months of notice.
Will GTA 6 have an online mode?
Not announced. Officially, GTA 6 is a "single-player experience." Reports about a later online launch are estimates, not Rockstar statements.
Should I still migrate GTA Online from PS4 to PS5?
Yes, if you are still on PS4. The PlayStation Store calls it a one-time migration, the PS5 upgrade has been free since June 2026, and only the Enhanced version gets all new content. No deadline is known, so migrate before launch to be safe.
