GTA 6 online release date: will GTA 6 have multiplayer at launch, and when could a GTA 6 Online show up?

Quick answer

As of August 21, 2026, GTA 6 is officially a single-player game. The PlayStation Store calls it "a single-player experience" and lists "1 player." Rockstar has announced no online mode, no crossplay, and no co-op, whether for the November 19, 2026 launch or for any point after it. Talk of an online mode arriving later is based on history (GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA 5 back in 2013), not on anything Rockstar has said.

About 90 days out from launch, one question keeps landing in our inbox right behind the price: can I play GTA 6 with my friends? The straight answer is no, not officially, and Rockstar has been completely silent on whether an online mode follows later. Meanwhile, a December release rumor and crossplay speculation keep spreading on social media. This page sorts out what Rockstar and Take-Two have actually said, what the press has inferred from that, and what is pure guesswork. It is a living status page: we will update it as soon as there is an official statement, with the Netflix "Extended Look" on August 27, 2026 at 3 p.m. ET being the next realistic shot.

Is GTA 6 single-player only? Here is what is officially confirmed

The official description leaves no room for interpretation, and it is the same in every store: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." That is the exact wording on the PlayStation Store and in Take-Two's June 24, 2026 press release announcing pre-orders. The US store listing adds "1 player," "Offline play enabled," and "Remote Play supported." Not one official text mentions an online mode, multiplayer, or co-op. That is where things stand on August 21, 2026, and it is solid information because it comes directly from the first parties, not from leakers or insiders.

Pay attention to what the wording leaves open. It does not rule out an online mode arriving down the line, but it does not announce one either. Everything Rockstar has put out so far is about Jason and Lucia's story: two trailers, character bios, cover art, editions. The only online-adjacent item in the pre-order bundle is a free month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders, and Take-Two explicitly frames it as the best way to get the most out of "the ever-evolving world of GTA Online" – the GTA Online that already exists alongside GTA 5, not something new built into GTA 6.

Both editions are story packages as well. The Ultimate Edition "amplifies this experience" with premium vehicles, weapons, and apparel that, according to the official blurb, are woven through Jason and Lucia's story. The reported contents – cars, a garage, shop access, two side missions – are all campaign items; no source mentions an online bonus or any kind of starting cash. If you are spending the extra $20 ($99.99 versus $79.99) because you expect online perks, you are buying on an assumption rather than a commitment. The upgrade only pays off if the story extras themselves matter to you.

What reports and rumors say about GTA 6 Online

The gaming press reads the store language as pointing to a single-player-only launch. Push Square reported on June 24, 2026 that GTA 6 "will be a 'single player experience' when it launches on 19th November" and that "there's currently no word on GTA Online, as Rockstar places all its marketing attention on Jason and Lucia's story." That is the outlet's analysis, not a Rockstar quote. The piece includes no statement from the studio about online; it draws its conclusion from the marketing and from past launches. Take it for what it is: reasonable, not official.

Then there is the specific date making the rounds on forums and social media: an online mode in December 2026, a few weeks after launch. We could not track down a credible source for it – no Rockstar statement, no report from a reputable outlet with a traceable origin. It is a rumor that pastes the GTA 5 timeline onto GTA 6. We mention it because people search for it, and we rate it unconfirmed.

Take-Two's own remarks are indirect at best. CEO Strauss Zelnick told IGN in February 2025, while stressing he was speaking "theoretically only" because nothing had been announced, that Take-Two supports its properties as long as consumers are engaged with them. On the August 7, 2026 earnings call he spoke of sustaining the new level of scale "for the next several years." Both comments get read as hints at long-term online plans; neither one names a GTA 6 online mode.

The precedent: how long after GTA 5 did GTA Online launch? And RDR Online after RDR2?

Rockstar shipped its last two major games without an online component and bolted one on shortly after. GTA 5 came out on September 17, 2013; GTA Online went live on October 1, 2013, exactly two weeks later. That rollout was messy – overloaded servers, lost characters, days of problems before Rockstar got it stable. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on October 26, 2018; the Red Dead Online beta opened in waves starting November 27, 2018 (Ultimate Edition owners first, everyone by November 30) and did not leave beta until May 14, 2019.

Plenty of people take that history and conclude a GTA 6 online mode could show up one to six weeks after November 19, 2026. That is an expectation built on a pattern, not a prediction with a source. Two things are different this time. GTA Online has become a multibillion-dollar business with weekly updates that Take-Two has no obvious reason to replace, and Rockstar has not even hinted that an online mode is in the works. In 2013, GTA Online was announced months ahead of release. Nothing like that exists now.

Our read: an online mode at launch on November 19 is off the table based on the official record. Everything after that is an open question – "a few weeks later" and "never in this form" are both on the table, and neither has a source. If multiplayer is the reason you are buying, either wait for an announcement or go in knowing you are buying a story game. A pre-order does not lock you in, either: Take-Two noted on its August 7, 2026 call that "you can cancel a pre-order," with the specific deadlines set by each store.

Will GTA 6 have crossplay or cross-progression?

There is no official statement on crossplay from anyone – not Rockstar, not Take-Two, not Sony, not Microsoft. For now the question is mostly hypothetical, since no online mode has been announced for crossplay to apply to. If one does arrive, crossplay would initially involve only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, because no PC version has been announced. The store listing is no help either: it mentions neither online play nor crossplay, which lines up with the single-player description. Any claim that crossplay is "confirmed" or "dead" traces back to leaks or forum posts, which makes it unconfirmed.

History is not encouraging. GTA Online has never supported crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in over twelve years, and Red Dead Online has always kept its platforms separate. Rockstar has never publicly commented on the subject. That does not lock GTA 6 into the same approach – lots of publishers have reversed course since 2018 – but with no statement, crossplay stays "unconfirmed" on this page, not "likely."

Cross-progression, meaning one save that follows you between PS5 and Xbox, is equally unannounced. Same story for carrying GTA Online progress, GTA$, or rank into a hypothetical GTA 6 Online: there is no statement in either direction, and Rockstar has never moved progress between games before (not GTA IV to V, not Red Dead to RDR2). We break down the details and what is actually worth doing now in GTA Online transfer to GTA 6.

GTA 6 split-screen co-op: can two people play together?

Not based on anything public. The store listing says "1 player," and no official text mentions co-op, couch multiplayer, or split-screen. Two playable protagonists does not change that: Rockstar presents Jason and Lucia as the leads of a story you play solo, and a two-player mode has never come up. Some people treat Rockstar's phrase "Jason and Lucia's story" – one shared story – as a co-op tease. Nothing backs that up: GTA 5 had three protagonists in Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, and you played every one of them by yourself.

The series has gone decades without local co-op. GTA: San Andreas (2004) on PS2 and Xbox had a mode that let two players roam the map together. GTA IV (2008) and GTA 5 (2013) dropped it completely, with Rockstar pushing everything social into its online modes. GTA 6 breaking that pattern would be a real surprise. It has not been officially ruled out, though, so we list it as "not announced."

What the listing does support is Remote Play, which streams from your PS5 to another device. Whether Sony's Share Play (passing the controller to a friend over the internet) gets enabled for GTA 6 is up to the developer, and nothing has been said. Do not plan on playing together in the traditional sense. Realistically, "playing GTA 6 with a friend" right now means handing over the controller or taking turns, just like any other single-player game. The moment Rockstar says otherwise, you will read it here.

What happens to GTA Online once GTA 6 is out?

GTA Online keeps going – that is the one piece of this that is reasonably solid. It got another major update on July 14, 2026, the "Kortz Center Heist Summer Update," weekly updates still drop every Thursday (most recently the "Brand Wars" event running August 20–26, 2026), and Take-Two pitches the free GTA+ month from GTA 6 pre-orders as a way into the existing GTA Online. No shutdown or end of support has been announced by anyone.

What is unclear is how long GTA Online keeps getting new content after November 19, 2026. Zelnick's 2025 comment that Take-Two keeps older titles alive alongside new ones while players are still there was deliberately broad. Our advice for the final 90 days: wrap up whatever you still want to finish in GTA Online, make sure your Rockstar account is linked properly, and do not count on any of it carrying into GTA 6.

What this means for your buying decision: PS5 or Xbox?

Until crossplay is confirmed, the old rule holds: buy GTA 6 on whichever console your friends play on. If an online mode arrives later and Rockstar sticks with its usual approach, you would otherwise be stuck in separate worlds. If you mostly play solo, pick based on hardware and price – our comparison GTA 6: PS5 vs. Xbox goes through the differences. Pricing is the same on both stores: $79.99 Standard, $99.99 Ultimate.

On editions: none of the reported Ultimate Edition contents is an online bonus; all of it is tied to the story. Whether the $20 premium still makes sense is covered in Is the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition worth it?. And if you pre-order a physical copy at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, or Target, keep in mind the box contains a download code, not a disc, per Take-Two – which has no bearing on the online question one way or the other.

What is still unconfirmed, and when we will update this page

As of August 21, 2026, the following remain unconfirmed: an online mode for GTA 6 (both whether and when), the December rumor, crossplay between PS5 and Xbox, cross-progression, co-op or split-screen, any carry-over of GTA Online progress, and GTA Online's future beyond the current update cycle. Only the negative is confirmed: GTA 6 is being sold as a single-player game listed for "1 player," and GTA Online is still up and running.

The next point where this could change is the "Extended Look" on August 27, 2026 at 3 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. PT on Netflix, followed by Rockstar's own channels at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. We will update this page as soon as Rockstar, Take-Two, or a platform store publishes anything new, and we will link the source right here. Launch-day server trouble is tracked separately on our server status page.

FAQ

Does GTA 6 have multiplayer?

Not officially. Rockstar and Take-Two describe GTA 6 as "a single-player experience," and the store lists "1 player." No multiplayer or online mode has been announced for launch or afterward.

What is the GTA 6 online release date?

There is none. GTA Online followed GTA 5 by two weeks in 2013, and the Red Dead Online beta followed RDR2 by about a month, but that is a pattern, not an announcement. A December 2026 date is circulating as a rumor with no source.

Will GTA 6 have GTA Online?

Nothing has been announced. The current GTA Online keeps running and getting updates, and the pre-order GTA+ month applies to it. Whether GTA 6 gets its own online mode is unknown as of August 21, 2026.

Is there GTA 6 multiplayer at launch?

No. Based on the official record, GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 as a single-player game. If multiplayer is what you want, hold off until there is an announcement.

Is GTA 6 cross platform?

There is no official word on crossplay. GTA Online and Red Dead Online never supported it. Until Rockstar says otherwise, play on the console your friends are on.

Will GTA 6 have crossplay?

Unknown. Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony, and Microsoft have all said nothing, and no online mode has been announced for crossplay to apply to. Treat any claim as unconfirmed.

Does GTA 6 have split-screen co-op?

Not announced. The store listing says "1 player." The last GTA with local two-player play was San Andreas in 2004; GTA IV and GTA 5 had no split-screen. Rockstar has not ruled it out, but there is no sign of it.

Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 comes out?

Nothing points to that. GTA Online got a major update in July 2026, and weekly events continue. Take-Two said in 2025 that it keeps older titles running while players stay engaged.
