GTA 5 PS4 to PS5 transfer: move your saves and GTA Online character before GTA 6

There are two technically distinct versions of GTA 5 in 2026. The original build for PS4 and Xbox One is what Rockstar now refers to as "Legacy." The newer build for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is "Enhanced," released March 15, 2022, with 4K support, higher frame rates, quicker loads, optional ray tracing and online-only additions like Hao's Special Works vehicles. PC didn't get Enhanced until March 4, 2025, as a free upgrade for existing owners, and that PC release is when Rockstar made the Legacy/Enhanced naming official. On console, the PlayStation Store just lists "GTA V (PS4 & PS5)."

The practical takeaway: PS4 and PS5 are separate games running separate online sessions. Someone playing on PS4 can't join a PS5 lobby, no matter how your PSN friends list looks. That makes the upgrade most valuable once your crew has moved up. To tell which version you're on, look for a "PS5 version" tag in the PlayStation Store entry, or open the settings: Enhanced gives you graphics modes to pick from, Legacy does not.

For most of the last four years, going from PS4 to PS5 cost money. After the three-month launch deal in 2022, Rockstar charged for the PS5 version; Push Square commenters say they paid around $10, though we couldn't verify an official price history. Per Push Square's June 18, 2026 report, Rockstar has pulled that paywall: every existing PS4 owner, disc or download, can now get the PS5 version for free from the game hub in the PlayStation Store.

Rockstar's description, quoted in the report, pitches "vast technical improvements, easy migration of your Story Mode and Online progress" along with features like Hao's Special Works vehicles and Career Progress rewards. Push Square reads the move as a way to get the roughly two million PS4 players still in GTA Online onto PS5 ahead of GTA 6; that number is the outlet's, not Rockstar's. Neither Rockstar nor the report gives an end date for the free upgrade. Disc owners, take note: the Blu-ray is still your license, so it has to be in the drive every time you start the PS5 version.

Your progress with Michael, Franklin and Trevor doesn't ride on PSN cloud saves; it goes through Rockstar's servers. Step 1: start GTA 5 on PS4 using the PSN account that owns the save, and confirm your Rockstar Games account (the old Social Club) is linked to that PSN account. Step 2: in Story Mode, open the pause menu and move to the "Game" tab. Step 3: pick "Upload Save Game" and confirm. Rockstar stores exactly one uploaded save per platform, so a new upload replaces the old one.

Step 4: install the PS5 version, boot it up and head into Story Mode. The download option lives in the same pause-menu spot. It writes the save to your PS5 locally and you pick up right where you left off. Watch the clock, though: Rockstar's launch announcement says an uploaded save stays available for 90 days. Uploading in August and collecting it at Thanksgiving is cutting it close. Your PS4 copy and its local save stay exactly as they were; this is a copy, not a move.

Online migration is its own process, and Rockstar calls it one-time. Requirements: an active PlayStation Plus membership (GTA Online needs it on PS5), a Rockstar Games account linked to the PSN account that holds your PS4 character, and launching the PS5 version on that same PSN account. The first time you enter GTA Online on PS5, the game offers to pull your profile over from the previous generation. Dismiss that prompt and roll a new character instead and you're in for a headache, so give the first launch a few undistracted minutes.

Rockstar spelled out the transfer list on the PlayStation Blog: characters, GTA$, progression, stats, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing and player-created jobs. GTA$ has one wrinkle: earned GTA$ always transfers, but purchased GTA$ (Shark Cards) only moves within the same platform family, meaning PS4 to PS5 works, PS4 to Xbox doesn't. At the 2022 launch, migrated characters also got an HSW-upgraded Karin S95, a racing outfit and Chameleon paints; whether that bonus is still granted in 2026 is unconfirmed. We also couldn't verify what becomes of the PS4 character after migration, so read the on-screen notice before you hit confirm.

On Xbox the process mirrors PlayStation. Rockstar's Xbox Wire post from March 14, 2022, confirms you can "transfer both GTAV Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression to Xbox Series X|S with a one-time migration." Story saves go to Rockstar's cloud from the pause menu, and Online migration kicks in the first time you open GTA Online on the Series console. The GTA$ rule holds: purchased GTA$ stays within the Xbox family, earned GTA$ moves either way.

Two things we couldn't pin down for Xbox. One: whether the Series X|S upgrade went free in June 2026 like the PS5 one did; Push Square covers PlayStation only. Pull up your Xbox One copy in the Microsoft Store and see whether an upgrade shows up without a price. Two: whether disc owners are excluded from that upgrade path is unconfirmed. The only hard fact is the hardware: the Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so an Xbox One disc won't work on it at all. If you own a disc and are moving to a Series S, expect to need a digital license.

"No save game found" nearly always traces back to one of three causes: the upload didn't finish on PS4 (wait for the confirmation), the 90-day window ran out, or the PS5 is signed into a different Rockstar Games account than the PS4 was. Open the linked accounts page of your Rockstar Games account and verify the PSN ID you uploaded from is the one attached. The other frequent issue: the migration prompt never shows up. That happens if you already created an Online character on PS5, or if your Rockstar account is tied to a different PSN ID. Either way, only Rockstar Support can sort it out. On friends: your PSN list isn't affected, but anyone still on PS4 becomes unreachable inside GTA Online because the versions run apart. Coordinate the switch with your crew, or you'll be playing in different worlds.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only; the PlayStation Store says flat out that it "is not playable on PlayStation 4." If you're still on PS4, a console upgrade is coming either way, and the GTA 5 transfer is a low-stakes dress rehearsal: you link the Rockstar account, learn the PS5 interface and park your Online character on the version Rockstar is actually updating. GTA Online keeps going after launch, and Enhanced is where the current content lands, including July 2026's Kortz Center Heist.

Whether any GTA Online progress will ever carry into GTA 6 is something Rockstar hasn't said a word about, and there's no precedent for it in the series; our GTA Online transfer to GTA 6 explainer digs into that. Rockstar's Support article on migration was unreachable when we checked on August 21, 2026; the rules in this guide are drawn from Rockstar's own posts on the PlayStation Blog and Xbox Wire (March 2022) plus Push Square's report on the free upgrade. Still unconfirmed: a deadline for the free PS5 upgrade or for Online migration (none announced, none ruled out); whether the Xbox Series upgrade is free as well; whether Xbox disc owners are excluded; whether the PS4 character stays playable after migration; and whether the 2022 HSW migration bonus is still awarded.

Verify these in-game: the upgrade price appears in the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store game hub, and the migration terms are shown in the prompt when you first launch the new version. We'll update this page the moment Rockstar refreshes the support article or announces a cutoff.
