GTA 6 download slow

Quick answer

Slow downloads on launch night are usually caused by overloaded CDNs, Wi-Fi interference or the console's rest-mode behavior. The most effective levers: ethernet cable, rest-mode downloads, pausing other downloads — and ideally the preload from November 12.

Quick fixes

  1. Ethernet instead of Wi-FiA direct connection to the router removes the most common bottleneck.
  2. Rest-mode downloads (PS5)Settings → System → Power Saving: enable "Stay Connected to the Internet". Downloads often run more stably in rest mode.
  3. Pause other downloads & streamsPause updates on other devices, 4K streams and cloud backups.
  4. Restart the consoleStalled downloads frequently resume at full speed after a restart.
  5. Try a different DNSAlternative DNS servers (e.g. 1.1.1.1) can help when the ISP's DNS is overloaded. Not a miracle cure.

Overloaded servers on launch night

In the first hours after unlock, CDNs worldwide run at full load. No local fix can solve that — the preload is the only real solution.

Wi-Fi as the bottleneck

Console downloads over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi are often several times slower than over ethernet.

FAQ

Why is my GTA 6 download so slow?

On launch night the content servers (CDNs) are usually overloaded — that hits everyone at once. Locally, the most common brakes are 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, parallel downloads/streams and stalled console download processes.

How long will the GTA 6 download take?

The download size is not officially confirmed yet. As a rule of thumb: 100 GB takes about 2.5 hours at a stable 100 Mbit/s and roughly 5 hours at 50 Mbit/s — often longer on launch night. That is why the preload from November 12 matters.

Does switching DNS actually help?

Sometimes. An alternative DNS (e.g. 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8) can help when your ISP's DNS is overloaded. It does not change the CDN's raw bandwidth — it is not a miracle cure.

Should I cancel the download and reinstall?

No. For stalled downloads a console restart is almost always enough — the download resumes. Reinstalling only costs time and bandwidth.
